RELATIONSHIP DECISION GUIDE

Should I text them?

The urge to send a message often mixes care, uncertainty, loneliness, and a wish for immediate relief. A useful decision separates your reason for contacting them from their right to choose whether to engage.

Short answer: Text them only if one brief message is respectful, safe, and consistent with their stated boundaries—and you can genuinely accept no reply.

Check these five things first

  1. Consent: Have they asked for distance or stopped contact clearly?
  2. Purpose: Are you sharing useful information, apologizing without demanding forgiveness, or simply seeking reassurance?
  3. Tone: Can the message be brief, kind, and free of guilt or pressure?
  4. Timing: Is this an appropriate hour in their time zone?
  5. Afterward: Can you send it once and step away from the phone?

When the answer should be no

Do not contact them after a clear request for no contact, through alternate accounts after being blocked, or when the message is intended to frighten, monitor, pressure, or force a response. If safety or harassment is involved, follow real-world support and legal guidance instead of a symbolic tool.

A safer version of the question

“Is it appropriate to send one respectful, no-pressure message today, then leave the choice to reply with them?” This creates a clear action, time frame, and boundary.
